There are usually a few scenarios that include InDesign not working as you expect. Whether it's a new computer, a fresh install, adding a new user... there are many reasons why things go haywire.
InDesign preferences can become corrupt - or the install didn't go according to plan.
Usually, uninstalling and reinstalling software is the first step many people take in rectifying recurring crashes, sadly these should only be a last resort.
1st: Most common fix
Delete InDesign preferences with shortcuts
You can delete the replaceable InDesign SaveData and InDesign Defaults files by holding down the following keys while InDesign is launching:
Mac OS: Shift+Control+Option+Command
You can find a detailed set of instructions for a deeper clean of your Preference files here:

2nd: Reinstalling InDesign - a better way!
As already mentioned, uninstalling and reinstalling - unfortunately for InDesign it's not going to help much. In steps the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool
